³ Now Israel^(A) loved Joseph more than any of his other sons,^(B) because he had been born to him in his old age;^(C) and he made an ornate^[a] robe^(D) for him.^(E)

⁴ When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him^(A) and could not speak a kind word to him.

⁴ But Jacob did not send Benjamin,^(A) Joseph’s brother, with the others, because he was afraid that harm might come to him.^(B)

³⁸ But Jacob said, “My son will not go down there with you; his brother is dead^(A) and he is the only one left. If harm comes to him^(B) on the journey you are taking, you will bring my gray head down to the grave^(C) in sorrow.^(D)”

¹³ Take your brother also and go back to the man at once.^(A)

¹⁴ And may God Almighty^[a](A) grant you mercy^(B) before the man so that he will let your other brother and Benjamin come back with you.^(C) As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved.”^(D)

²⁶ They told him, “Joseph is still alive! In fact, he is ruler of all Egypt.”^(A) Jacob was stunned; he did not believe them.^{(B) 27} But when they told him everything Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the carts^(C) Joseph had sent to carry him back, the spirit of their father Jacob revived. ²⁸ And Israel said, “I’m convinced!^(D) My son Joseph is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.”^(E)

¹⁰ Now Israel’s eyes were failing because of old age, and he could hardly see.^(A) So Joseph brought his sons close to him, and his father kissed them^(B) and embraced them.^(C)

¹¹ Israel^(A) said to Joseph, “I never expected to see your face again,^(B) and now God has allowed me to see your children too.”^(C)
